Play Klang C³afe sits in a shophouse opposite Klang’s train station, and it’s doing something borderline insane: turning the city’s sacred bak kut teh into pasta, bread and even ice cream. No pork, all Muslim-friendly, so everyone, even backpackers who’ve just got off the train, can get a taste. The café bills itself as “culture, creativity, connection”, and the century-old walls prove it, doubling as a museum of the city’s history. Expect to see everything from photos of old bridges to a cardboard skyline imagined by local schoolkids. Now the food. Start with the bak kut teh carbonara: chicken, poached egg, creamy sauce. Against all odds, the herbs don’t drown the pasta; instead, they play nice. Same for the risotto: comforting, savoury, cleaned plates all around. The Turkish bak kut teh bread is flaky, buttery, and a surprising bridge between Klang and Istanbul. Then comes the monster: bak kut teh ice cream. A scoop of cold vanilla tangled with herbal soup notes and mushroom bits. The first bite tastes like a prank. The second, less so. By the third, you’re wondering why you’re not ordering more. Call it grotesque. Call it genius. Either way, it gets people talking. The drinks menu also serves as a history lesson in a cup, QR codes leading to stories of Klang in six languages. Try “Hello Yappy”—sparkling coffee with grapefruit—or “Crow Signature,” an iced tea nodding to Klang’s loudest residents. Both hit the spot on a hot day, which is good, because the café’s aircon gives up as soon as the sun gets serious. Not everything lands. Some say the risotto’s undercooked, the spaghetti stranger than expected, the service inexperienced. Sometimes it’s salty, pricey, inconsistent—like Klang itself. This isn’t a safe café. It’s where bak kut teh gets dressed up for a party it never asked to attend. But in a world drowning in cookie-cutter cafés, at least this place has the guts to be different.

Impressed by creative heritage trail initiatives through art programmes with kids & the landmark tours as displayed. The cafe is valuing a historic building with its sturdy wooden stairs & long hallway. Hope the modern fusion of bkt /pork free bak kut teh will honour the original taste enough for more thumbs up. Nyway, loved the sitting area upstairs, carbonara & sauce with ice cream.

Play Klang Café is a magical place, rich in history and culture. From the moment you walk in, you can feel a warm and peaceful atmosphere. The owners and staff are incredibly welcoming, sharing fascinating anecdotes and curiosities about the city of Klang. The café is well-maintained, clean, and spacious. During your visit, you’ll not only enjoy delicious food, but you’ll also be surrounded by artworks and installations that tell the captivating story of this wonderful city. Klang itself is a hidden gem. Visiting it means immersing yourself in one of the most multicultural places in Malaysia. As you walk through Little India, you’ll be enchanted by the vibrant scents, colors, and the incredible hospitality of the locals. Klang is home to mosques, Buddhist temples, and Hindu temples—all within the same city. It’s a truly unique and beautiful example of harmony and cultural diversity. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

Interesting concept, but it was quite hot in the afternoon when we were there for lunch—no air-conditioning. The food variety is limited. They serve interesting coffee. I would definitely go back for their coffee and tiramisu. Not suitable for groups larger than 6 people, as the place is quite small. Mid-High price point.

This place has a chill, aesthetic, and creative vibe! The staff are super friendly, and they offer a free guided tour of the Klang Story House, which helped me learn more about the history of Klang. They serve a variety of Bakuteh-flavored dishes. I highly recommend the Klang Carbonara! It’s a unique and delicious combination.
